The Boston Red Sox are sitting on the edge of something big, but to truly become one of the best teams in the American League in 2025, they need just a little more balance in their starting lineup.

That balance? Right-handed power. The missing ingredient could take this team from solid to downright dominant in an AL that’s as wide open as it’s been in years.

Why Right-Handed Power is the Key

Overall, the Red Sox aren’t in a bad spot. Their starting rotation is shaping up to be one of their best assets and their lineup is full of talent.

However, if we did pick out one flaw it would be the batting order’s left-handed heavy tilt. Boston needs to add a little more right-handed pop to offset the imbalance to instill some fear in opposing pitchers.

Alex Bregman has been the name on everyone’s lips—his right-handed bat and proven track record would fit seamlessly into the lineup.

But here’s the catch: Bregman hasn’t signed anywhere yet, and there’s no guarantee the Red Sox will land him. That means Boston has to be ready with a backup plan and fast.

Plan B: JD Martinez and the DH Role

Enter JD Martinez. Sure, Martinez doesn’t bring any defensive upside, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a valuable piece for Boston.

The DH role is wide open, with reports suggesting that the team plans to give Masataka Yoshida more time in the outfield next season.

Martinez could slot in there nicely, possibly platooning with Yoshida. Martinez’s bat is a solid addition to any lineup in the MLB. He’s a six-time All-Star, and his ability to still provide some pop at the plate shouldn’t be overlooked.

What About the Red Sox Young Talent?

Going with someone like Martinez could also solve another puzzle. If the Red Sox steer clear of signing Bregman, it opens up second base for one of their young players like Vaughn Grissom or Kristian Campbell to step into a regular role.

Giving these younger guys a chance to shine could pay dividends for Boston’s long-term success. Boston could also maintain financial flexibility as Martinez would come at a lower price tag.

So, what’s the play? Whether it’s Bregman, Martinez, or another right-handed bat, the Red Sox must find a way to add that spark to their lineup.

If they do, 2025 could be the year they finally reestablish themselves as a powerhouse in the American League.
