The current MLB playoff setup is a total mess. It is designed to screw the best teams in the American League. If you look at the standings, the Red Sox, Yankees, and Rays have been running the AL since Boston’s hot streak in July and August. Yet, the bracket makes it possible for an underwhelming team to sneak in and steal a World Series spot.
The math just doesn’t work. BoSox Injection states that just one team among the AL’s top three will reach the ALCS. It is fundamentally broken. The current system gives the top three seeds to division winners based on their record. This means a team can win a weak division and get a massive advantage even if their actual win-loss record is worse than a Wild Card team.
The Flaw in the Seeding Logic
The AL East is a shark tank every single year. It is much harder to win here than in other divisions. Per BoSox Injection, the Baltimore Orioles are currently in last place in the AL East, but they still have one less win than the Rangers or the Astros. Because those teams lead their own divisions, they get higher seeds. It makes zero sense to reward a team just because they play in a specific division.
The postseason should be about who actually wins games. I want to see the best records at the top. A 76-76 team should never be seeded higher than an 82-70 team just because of a division label. The current format makes the regular season feel like a lottery. It rewards luck over actual dominance.
Why the Bracket Is Unacceptable
The bracket is even more ridiculous when you look at the Wild Card race. Prior to September 17 contests, the Texas Rangers stand alone as a .500-or-better Wild Card contender. Meanwhile, the Houston Astros lead the AL West and hold the tiebreaker over the Rangers, even though they also have a .500 record.
